The Small Oil Rig was introduced to Rust on March 7th, 2019. The Small Oil Rig randomly spawns off-shore around the outer edges of the map.
At the beginning of any new wipe cycle, the Small Oil Rig becomes an amazing location for securing weapons and explosives at the earlier stages of a map reset, although due to this, it is an extremely popular location for players to go in order to gain an advantage early on.
Overview
Spanning across four levels, the Small Oil Rig monument hovers above sea-level with each level outlined by a number along the outside of the platform. One the lowest level, a boat is on standby allowing players to travel to and from the mainland. On the highest level, a helipad can be accessed by helicopter.
The Small Oil Rig consists of fifteen blue scientists who roam around protecting the chests that spawn around the rig, making it a challenge to loot the entire thing alone. On the upper decks there is a military-grade loot chest. In order to retrieve this, you will have to defeat a group of around seven heavy scientists. Heavy weaponry is advised.
Accessing the Small Oil Rig
This monument is completely secluded from the mainland. Players wishing to complete this monument should consider arriving with the necessary medical supplies such as food, water, fuel, transportation and sufficient weapons (non primitive).
There are multiple ways to access this monument. The most efficient and practical ways of accessing it are by boat or by air. Players should secure a RHIB and or motorboat if they wish to boat to the dock on level 0. Alternatively, players can access this monument via air by securing a Mini-copter, Hot Air Balloon, or the recently added Scrap Helicopter.
It is advised to bring a partner or group to clear this monument. The scientists are difficult to take on alone as they will engage anyone within range before the player makes contact.

Heavy Scientist & Chinook Event
On the final floor there is a locked military crate located between a stack of piping in the center of the level.
Upon interacting with this crate, the following event will occur:
- Alarms will activate notifying any nearby players that the event has begun
- A Chinook helicopter will now be en-route to the final floor of the helipad to prevent players from opening the crate
- A 15-minute timer will begin, allowing the player to open the crate once the timer expires
Upon landing, five heavy scientists will exit the Chinook, all wearing heavy armor and carrying powerful weaponry. These are very difficult to defeat alone.
Once the scientists exit the Chinook, they will immediately take defensive positions and prevent the players from looting the crate. As soon as these are killed, you will have to wait 15 minutes in order for the crate to unlock and allow you to loot it.
Tip
In order to make the fight much easier, use one of the accessible rooms (blue card room or fuse room) to prevent yourself from taking too much damage.
You are able to open and close the door and use this to provide yourself with an advantage when attacking.
